Rainwater harvesting is an essential strategy for sustainable water management, especially in Pune, where water scarcity and erratic rainfall patterns pose significant challenges. At Mahiti Seva Samiti, we are dedicated to addressing these challenges through innovative and effective rainwater harvesting projects. Our efforts include the development of large-scale rainwater storage solutions and community-based initiatives designed to enhance water security and promote environmental sustainability.

One of our most ambitious projects is the construction of Chatrapathi Lake within the Bakori Vanarai Project. This lake, designed to hold 1 crore (10 million) liters of water, is a crucial addition to our rainwater harvesting efforts. Located in Wagholi and Bakori, areas known for their low rainfall and depleted groundwater levels, Chatrapathi Lake plays a pivotal role in increasing underground water reserves. By capturing and storing significant amounts of rainwater, Chatrapathi Lake contributes to the recharge of groundwater, adding approximately 100 crore (1 billion) liters of water annually. This large-scale storage solution is not only vital for mitigating water scarcity but also enhances the overall sustainability of water resources in these low-rainfall areas.

As part of our comprehensive approach to rainwater harvesting, we have also undertaken the excavation of numerous potholes in the Bakori Vanarai Project area. These potholes are designed to capture and store rainwater, facilitating groundwater recharge and reducing surface runoff. By strategically placing these potholes across the region, we enhance the capacity of the land to absorb and retain water, further supporting our efforts to address water scarcity.We conduct educational workshops and awareness campaigns to inform the public about the benefits of rainwater harvesting, provide practical advice on system installation and maintenance, and encourage the adoption of water conservation measures.
